Ph.D. Mercedes Pérez Vidal

Mercedes Pérez Vidal is an art historian, specialist in Castilian Dominican nunneries. She is currently Marie Curie-Clarín cofund post doc fellow at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, where she is working on a project titled Libraries, liturgical performance and monastic spaces in the Iberian mendicant nunneries. Dr. Perez Vidal aims to establish a comparative approach between monastic culture, nuns’ liturgical performance, and functionality of monastic spaces in the Iberian Kingdoms and Germany.

In 2013, she obtained her PhD at the University of Oviedo (Spain) with a thesis titled Art and architecture of the Dominican nunneries in the "Province of Spain". From the origins until the reform (1218-1506). She is particularly interested in the study of Medieval and Early Modern art and architecture in relation to liturgy in Mendicant nunneries in Spain, Latin America and Italy. Her last research project (2015-2017) focused on manuscript production, liturgical sources and libraries from Nunneries in Northern Italy. She has previously worked at the University of Oviedo and the National University of Distance Education in Spain and was postdoctoral fellow at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and at the University of Padua (Marie Curie-Piscopia). 

She has published several articles on issues such as patronage, foundational processes, legislation regarding the case of the Order of Preachers' nunneries in Spain, and the Viceroyalties of Peru and New Spain. Among them:
