Exhibition: Colonial connections

Colonial connections: Rhineland/Grassland - Germany/Cameroon

Exhibition on the research project of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the Université de Dschang in cooperation with the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf.

Duration: 12.09.-28.09.2017

Germany and Cameroon are connected in a special way by the divided colonial history until today: While Germany's thirty-year colonial presence in Cameroon is not forgotten, it is, in contrast, hardly known in Germany.

In order to search for traces of their linked history, an institute partnership sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has existed for a year and a half between the Institute of Historical Studies at Heinrich Heine University and the University of Dschang in Cameroon. Teachers from both universities have conducted research with their students from the subjects of history as well as media and cultural studies and German studies.

In interviews in both places, Düsseldorf and Dschang, the complex web of mutual influences was thus worked through, which defies a simple victim-perpetrator narrative of colonial history.

We cordially invite you to explore with us the colonial connections of the two regions Rhineland (Germany) and Grassland (Cameroon) within the framework of an exhibition, a film series, discussion events and city walks.
